Our Russian Brothers

New 04/10/2006, Updated 04/11/06, 04/13/2006

Hello Carter! Hope You remember me… This is Gosha from Russia… Haven't heard you very very long. Time passes by, but hope that real post 95 SHO owners are in a good fit, mood and shape Really many things happened since we had a communication for the last time… There are two news related V8SHOs (of course if you are interested:)? A good one, and bad one. First I had to sold my TR SHO last summer as I had to go for a long-long-long business trip to Europe… A good one: I'm a V8SHO owner again. This time I found a 96 SF with replaced engine and tranny (only 20000 km ago). So next week I'm going to carry out a cam weld procedure in Russian conditions again (wish me luck;)… For this period found 3 more V8SHO owners-friends in Russia – of course told them about cam problem and gave them detailed instructions on cam weld procedure (as you taught me:) – and they fixed their cams successfully!!!

Hope you’ll remember me and answer how are you doing

Best wishes

Sincerely yours

Gosha

Thought I would share this with the list since I am fairly confident he is not a current list member. Remember he is Russian and works as an Engineer at a Nuclear Power Company in Moscow.

Here is the latest from our Russian SHO owner.

Carter Fuji

Hello Carter! Don’t know weather it is worth congratulating, but finely I welded my cams… Hole procedure took about 10 hours… It seemed to me that there was some kind of ticking noise, so it was great to find out that sprockets were not slipping. We changed all related gaskets, washed and blasted an intake components at the pressure of 10 atmospheres, welder put 3 beads on each cam (this time ½” long, previously ¼,” don’t know weather it is good or not). Almost successfully reassembled… Say almost – because somehow mechanic broke an appearance cover…

One more problem appeared after five months of winter staying in garage – not great, but leakage of ATF from oil pan… So it is turn to change an ATX gasket and filter I suppose… May I ask you a question? When I found out that there is a leakage of ATF I started engine & warmed it up to the working temp, then while staying shifted to each gear and checked a level of ATF – it showed that level is below a spot at the end of tester, then I made several miles and ATF level grew up to the crosshatch area… So I called to a neighbor who is involved into ATX repairing business, and he told me taking into consideration the leakage to put about ½ quarter of ATF, after that I made several more miles and checked again – level was ½ inch higher then max mark … Will higher level kill ATX or it is not so awful? I understand that it may be a silly question, but this weekend was to nervous to turn on brains before following that advice.

As for Russian SHO owners, I’ll send photos of their SHOs this evening – they are on my home computer…

My home E-mail address is goldenbird81@mail.ru , so please don’t be afraid it is not a virus – its me
It's very disappointing that we don't have a rose mist in Russia L First, thanks for you links-very useful page. Yesterday I found one place where they are eager to bring a non original water pump only for 200$ - don't think it is worth installing. One more link of V8SHO in Russia - my previous TR if you are interested: http://strimfoto.ru/users/goldbird/71139/

By the way what word goldbird may mean in English?

So wish me luck - going to weld my cams this weekend.

My friends promised me to make photos of their V8SHOs, so if you are interested I may send them to you on Monday J

Have a good weekend

Sincerely yours

Gosha

I am occasionally referred to by many names, but the one I like the most is Uncl Lar. I moderate the V8List and am one of the webmasters of www.v8sho.com
I think it would be wonderful if you and your friends that own GIII V8's would become part of our community.
Please feel free to write me anytime about anything. I'm thinking of creating a special page for our Russian brothers. Tell me if you would like that. Perhaps we could post it bi-lingual in both Russian and English.

Having lived in Russia for 6 years, (1993-1998) I am really curious how the
SHO suspensions are holding up over there, and how they are handling normal
maintenance and spare parts and so forth. Our USAID projects had an
assortment of Russian-made cars at their disposal (Volga, Zhiguli) as well
as a couple Volvos and one Mercedes. The good thing about the Russian-made
cars is that although they all have issues (especially when new) in Russia,
if you break down on the side of the road, people will always stop to help
you, and eventually someone will have the spare part you need. Everyone
typically carries a wide variety of things in the trunk including extra gas.
etc. - trunks are NOT for suitcases. As far as imports, getting parts can be
tough but there are enormous numbers of Mercedes' and Volvos, Grand
Cherokees, etc. now on the roads, more than anywhere in the world I believe
in Moscow especially, and more and more repair facilities opening up
everywhere. Still, it's mind-boggling to think of having to repair anything
on a SHO.

Here is his inquiry from this morning.
Carter Fuji

How are you Carter, hope fine! Wanted to ask you for advice.

How do you think is it possible to change water pump from the hood space or it is absolutely necessary to take away underframe?(Think he means SubFrame)
Also a question about cooling fluid is this procedure needs cooling fluid to be drained completely? If it is, then how to fill back cooling system properly?
What other problems can occur?
Sorry for asking too many questions
Please tell me if I am bothering
Thank you
