Gas Tank Replacement - Hammy's Observations

new 1/8/2004

Just finished, did the job in the garage with the doors open for ventilation. -15C, I'm still thawing out, but I can now feel my toes.

Not a hard job, 5 hours with several thawing out breaks.

A couple of initial observations;

1/ Tank was indeed Fubar'd as was the filler assembly.

2/ '96 fuel pump had the exact same female connector that the '97 car system had. Two females do not make a good situation, not on wiring anyways. I did not notice this prior to my first "dry run" of installation. Had to drop it and swap out my old fuel pump into the replacement tank. The old pump obviously had the correct male connector.

3/ Canister configuration on the tank was different on the '96 as I believe Glen or Paul had mentioned. Not an issue since I swapped out the filler tube as well therefore it matched. Would be an issue if it was a tank swap only. It would require swapping the canister from one tank to the other. Not a big deal really.

4/ Removing filler tube requires removing inner wheel well cover.

5/ Removing the filler tube requires a series of 35 sequential moves to remove. Miss any one step and you have to repeat starting from the first position. (j/k, but not by much)

6/ Rear wheels should be at ~4" off the ground to remove tank with relative ease/clearance.

7/ Two people much better than one. Do as I did and invite your brother out for a coffee then tell him what's going on.

8/ Wear safety glasses and keep your mouth closed.

9/ I used a hair dryer to soften up the lines for reconnect. Fuel lines are not very pliable at -15.

10/ Do not do this job in the dead of winter.

I will do a proper procedure and send to Larry for future reference.

Later,

I'll never forget Paul's quote to me one day while working on the SHO - "It's not difficult, just time consuming." Seems the mantra of working on our cars! Hurry up with the procedure, Hammy!!
